Rioja Three-In-One

ALL OF RIOJA
IN ONE DAY

All Rioja wines are labelled as "Rioja", although there are in fact, three sub regions, Rioja Alta, Rioja Altavesa and Rioja Baja.
On our Rioja Three-In-One Tour, you vist one representative cellar in each of the three regions and will learn which is your favourite Rioja, and you can then also easily start to track the style differences between Alta, Alavesa, and Baja.

Because most wineries do not have land holdings in multiple sub-regions, the wines of a particular producer will often consistently show the characteristics of their sub-region. Rioja Alta (on the western section) has higher elevation, often seen as highest quality area with great verve and balance. Rioja Alavesa (the northern section), also has high elevation but poor soils which actually helps to keep yields down, resulting in full bodied and high acid wines). And Rioja Baja (the southeast) with drier, warmer and more Mediterranean climate, producing wines of ripeness and power.

Combine that with the fact that winemakers are allowed to blend the four main grapes in any percentage, so you end up a huge variation in styles and possibilities acrosss Rioja. From light bodied, fresh reds, to matured powerful oaky reds, and everything in between.
